We track number of words read, and I am so thrilled that each year I have had students reach the Million Word Club. Accelerated Reader is designed to get children motivated to read more. As a supplement to a reading program, AR enhances children's reading abilities and enriches their reading experiences and comprehension. An accelerated reading program is a program initially developed at the University of Wisconsin, and now marketed by Renaissance Software®.
Based on this information, teachers can get a better picture of the student’s reading level and development over time. Many parents have fond memories of the program, which encouraged them to go out, find and read books that appealed to them based on their interests, rather than being on a pre-approved reading list. Searching for books with a corresponding Renaissance Accelerated Reader 360® quiz is easy with Accelerated Reader Bookfinder®. Vocabulary Practice Quizzesmeasure a child's command of vocabulary words encountered while reading. They are designed to reinforce vocabulary acquisition, assist with individualising vocabulary instruction and generate your child's interest in words through authentic, in-context literature experiences. Quizzes include 5, 10 or 15 words from a particular book as well as review words from previously read books.
How Accelerated Reader Tests Work
They may also find helpful summaries from which they can derive big picture questions. Reading Practice Quizzesare the most common type of assessment in Accelerated Reader. The purpose of these quizzes is to determine whether your child has read a book, to measure your child's literal comprehension of the book and to provide immediate feedback. Each Reading Practice Quiz consists of 3, 5, 10 or 20 multiple-choice questions depending on book level and length.
These beginner lessons can be designed around kids, teens, and adults, helping even the most challenged reader improve comprehension. We can help kids prepare for spelling bees, improve their comprehension for standardized tests, and assist adults in overcoming reading hurdles. The goal of the AR program is for students to score at 85% or above on the tests. Scoring lower may indicate that the material is too difficult, and the student should select a book at the lower end of his/her reading level. A student who scores at 95% or above should select a book at the upper end of his or her reading range.
How do you take an AR test without reading the book?

Quiz questions are based on 24 specific, higher-order reading comprehension skills.
Can I make something like an Accelerated Reader program for my homeschool?
A mom of two, she majored in English Language and Literature and worked as a substitute teacher and tutor for several years. When not writing she continues to root for the Yankees and the Giants. Sadly, the program is not available for homeschooling parents.
This will enable students to read books and take quizzes from the comfort of home. Finally, ReadingIQ gives both parents and kids the ability to track and monitor reading progress. It allows parents to track what their students are reading and the relative difficulty of the material they are reading. Finally, a reading program can yield a lot of useful information for parents, including what students are reading, the relative difficulty of what they are reading and if they understands what they’re reading. Accelerated Reader is a very useful reading incentive program and is quite well-designed for learning, which is why it is commonly used in schools.

According to research, children who read at least 20 minutes a day with a 90% comprehension rate on Accelerated Reader quizzes see the greatest gains. Therefore, your child will have at least 20 minutes set aside for reading during each school day. Since they are reading books at their reading and interest levels, they are likely to be successful.
The first step for interested parents is to find a resource with a good selection of books for kids to look through. It is certainly possible to create a home incentive reading program system for very little money. Epic contains an extensive catalog of high quality digital books that, like ReadingIQ, can also be helpfully organized by reading difficulty measures, with the app using Accelerated Reader and Lexile Measures to do so. On the downside, although decently sized and containing a lot of high-interest reading material, ReadingIQ’s library is more limited (7000+ books) than other digital libraries. An incentive program needs, well, an incentive to encourage kids to keep reading and keep challenging themselves.
If you are not looking for a way to cheat on the Accelerated Reader program, then LEAVE. That said, while it isn’t a perfect system, Epic does offer a large digital collection of books kids will love with quite a few features that parents can use to replicate most of the program at home. As kids use Epic and read their books and hit a variety of preset goals, they are awarded badges and unlock achievements, tracking and recognizing their achievements much in the way the AR program would do with points. There are four main components to that we think parents should focus on when trying to create their own reading incentive program. The first step in doing so, however, is to break down and understand the general components of a good reading incentive program.
The program tracks their progress over the course of the school year. The app lets you scan a barcode to see if there is an AR test for it. It will display the reading level, points available, and quiz number for the scanned title.
Based on extensive research, we can provide guidelines for the approximate number of Accelerated Reader points children should be able to earn depending on how much time they read and their reading level. Monitoring Accelerated Reader points earned by children and comparing them to the guideline values enables your child's teacher to determine how well your child is using the time provided for reading practice. If the school has Star Reading, students' scores will be accessible in Accelerated Reader, making it easier for teachers to set point targets for students. Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program that schools may use to monitor reading practice and progress. It helps teachers guide kids to books that are on kids' individual reading levels. Kids take short quizzes after reading a book to check if they've understood it.
